History

Akihabara (秋葉原), popularly known as Akiba, is one of Tokyo's best-known neighborhoods. In the past, it was especially known for being one of the centers of electronics in the country, although for a few years it has also been one of the mecca of the otaku culture.

Larger stores and probably with a more 'modern' look can be found on the Chuo-dori main street, but we can not help but get lost in the narrow and ancient streets near it, such as the Sotokanda 1-chome area, close to the station, which are full of old electronics stores worth seeing.

Among the most well-known electronics chains are Laox, Ishimaru, Sofmap, Yamda Denki, Akki or the huge Yodobashi Camera complex.

The Maid Cafe

Akihabara is also known for the popular maid cafes or maid cafes, where maids are dressed as maids; your sleeve kissaten or cybercafés where you can read manga and watch DVDs and, sometimes, if you have run out of train at night, spend the night in a small cubicle; and its cafes and restaurants of fashion idols or manga and anime characters (such as the AKB48 Cafe or the Gundam Cafe), as well as several bars and karaoke.

Shops

Also in Akihabara we find the Tokyo Anime Center, with exhibitions related to the world of manga and anime and a store where you can buy everything.
